The Soda Challenge – Take One

I have a bit of a confession to make. I was, for a time, absolutely addicted to Coca Cola. I used to drink soda as causally as the next person, but I actually developed a dependency sometime right after I quit my corporate job to start freelancing full-time. Coca Cola is my absolute favorite soda – I like the fact that it isn’t as sweet as Pepsi. Dr. Pepper was always my back-up.

I could drink a 2 liter bottle of Coke by myself over the course of 1-2 days, on average. I would usually buy a liter after I was done at the dojo on a Saturday, knowing that I’d be pulling a late night. I’d drink it through the night and then into Sunday. I might even start a 2nd bottle before the weekend was through. That’s not to mention what I was drinking during the week (though I did taper down a bit at night and drink water at the dojo). I’m not talking about diet soda, either. I’m talking about full-calorie, high fructose corn syrup poison.

It’s been well over a year since I’ve had soda like that. I did realize I was doing myself a disservice and I quit caffeine altogether for a little while. Now, soda is not usually a part of my diet. The general exception is a ginger ale if I’m ill.

That said, I have gotten back to occasionally having a soda here or there – maybe if we’re out to lunch or if my man brings it home to drink (man, that orange soda we had yesterday was good). Most of the time I’ll avoid it, but lately I’ve been more inclined to have a sip or two.

I want that to stop.

I’m issuing myself a soda challenge (and I hope you’ll take it, too, if you drink soda). It’s just not good for me, and I know it. I’m putting a timer in the right sidebar so you can see how long it’s been since I’ve had a soda. I had one today, so this is a brand new timer. If I drink a soda, I’ll have to reset the timer.┬áThe only exception is a ginger ale if I get sick, but I’ll still make a note of it here on the blog.

So here we go. Are you joining me? It doesn’t have to be soda. It could be some other beverage of choice. Alcohol, coffee, black tea. Choose your over-consumed poison and let me know what you’re aiming to cut out of your diet!
